Last month, not one but two phone companies introduced their versions of foldable phones. From Samsung, they introduced a phone that folds face-in with a small 4.6-inch display on one side of the back. In Huawei Mate X, the screen folds outwards which looks sleeker than the Samsung Fold. Both of the phones are more expensive than the current flagship phones – Samsung Galaxy Fold costs 1980$ (3,000,000 Kyats) and Huawei Mate X will cost 2600$ (3,900,000 Kyats), making the value proposition choice factor easier with the large gap.

Incidentally, not many people know that these are not the world’s first foldable phones. Back in November of 2018, a relatively small phone manufacturer called Royale released a phone called The Royole FlexPai, and it seems like the only reason they made it was to be the first Foldable phone ever. A lot of people called it ugly for its design; it is not comparable to the ones from Samsung and Huawei, and it never made it into Myanmar phone market. Apparently, Xiaomi’s foldable phone prototype has been leaked in a video. Lenovo owned Motorola Company is also reportedly working on a Foldable version of their RazorPhone.

With all these companies jumping on this foldable bandwagon, the question still remains, should you buy it, even if the price is affordable? Is foldable phone the future?

Flexible screen technology has been in the news since the start of this decade. We have seen countless concept art displays on the internet. Nearly all the display manufacturers have shown their big and small foldable display at an exhibition, but it was never intended for mass release until now. It is finally a reality, but the huge price tag and the practicality of the flexible technology are making us wonder, do we really need it?

The phone industry is hungry for more fresh ideas and innovation, as the last three years with phones are more or less the same in terms of technology. Now the phone manufacturers are projecting foldable phones as their next big thing.

Price has always been a factor in how people decide to buy their phones. Even if the technology becomes normal in the future and every phone manufacturer offers a foldable version along with their flagship ones, a foldable phone will still be more expensive than the normal flagship phone. With the flagship phones already costing 1,000$ (1,500,000 kyats), will people buy the Foldable Phone, or will the phone manufacturers keep making these just for the novelty of the foldable display?

The folding screen technology in itself is very exciting, in the near future; we will surely be seeing them in E-book readers, maybe a laptop with a bendable screen that also serves as a keyboard. The military can take advantage of this technology by using it on their gadgets and in space exploration they can use it on their spacesuits.

Right now it is very apparent that the technology is still in its infancy even though hardware engineers have been working on it for the better part of this decade. It might spark people’s interest but the price tag doesn’t seem like it is intended for the mass-market customer. Samsung has confirmed that they will be selling Galaxy Fold with limited supply.

The majority of the people who will buy the foldable phones are either tech fans who want to try this new technology or someone who needs the practicality of using a phone that can also be a tablet at the same time. The only question right now is whether you want to be an early adopter or not, and will it still be relevant three or four years down the line?

ေရွ႕လတုန္းက ဖုန္းကုမၸဏီႏွစ္ခုမွ ေခါက္ဖုန္းေတြကို မိတ္ဆက္ခဲ့တာကို ေတြ႕လိုက္ရတယ္ေနာ္။ Samsung Galaxy Fold သည္ အတြင္းဘက္သို႔ေခါက္ထားျပီး ေနာက္ေက်ာဘက္တြင္ ၄.၆ လက္မရွိတဲ့ မ်က္ႏွာျပင္ အေသးတစ္ခုပါရွိတယ္၊ Huawei Mate X က်ေတာ့ မ်က္ႏွာျပင္အျပင္ဖက္ ကို ေခါက္သြားျပီး Samsung Galaxy Fold ႏွင့္ယွဥ္ၾကည့္လ်ွင္ ပိုမိုသပ္ရပ္တယ္လို႕ထင္ရပါတယ္။ ဖုန္းႏွစ္ခုလံုး ယခုေစ်းကြက္ထဲက ေစ်းအၾကီးဆံုးဖုန္းေတြထက္ေတာင္ ပုိျပီးေစ်းၾကီးေနတာကို ေတြ႔ရတယ္။ Samsung Galaxy Fold က ၁၉၈၀ ေဒၚလာ (၃၈သိန္း ဝန္းက်င္) ရွိျပီး Huawei Mate X ကေတာ့ ၂၆၀၀ ေဒၚလာ (၃၉ သိန္း) ထိ မယံုႏိုင္ေလာက္ေအာင္ကို ေစ်း ၾကီးတာကိုေတြ႕ရတယ္။ 

Samsung Galaxy Fold ဟာ ပထမဆံုးဖုန္းထြက္လာတဲ့ ေခါက္ဖုန္းေတာ့မဟုတ္ပါဘူး။ ျပီးခဲ့တဲ့ ႏို၀င္ဘာတုန္းက လူသိမမ်ားတဲ့ Royale ဟုေခၚေသာ ဖုန္း company တစ္ခု မွ Royale FlexPai ဟုအမည္ေပးထားတဲ့ ဖုန္းတစ္လံုးထြက္ခဲ့ပါတယ္၊ ဖုန္းရဲ႕ဒီဇိုင္း ၾကည့္ရတာေတာ့ ပထမဆံုး ေခါက္ဖုန္း ျဖစ္ဖို႔သက္သက္ သာထုတ္္လုပ္ခဲ့တယ္လို႔ထင္ရတယ္၊ ရုပ္ဆိုးတယ္ ဟုေ၀ဖန္ခဲ့ၾကတယ္၊ ဒီဇိုင္းပိုင္းမွာေတာ့ Samsung တို႔ Huawei တို႔နဲ႔ယွဥ္လို႔မရဘူး ၊ ျမန္မာ ဖုန္းေစ်းကြက္ထဲကိုေတာင္ မေရာက္ခဲ့ပါဘူး။ Xiaomi ဖုန္း ကုမၸဏီမွလည္းမမိတ္ဆက္ရေသးတဲ့ေခါက္ဖုန္း အသံုးျပဳေနပံု ဗီဒီယို တစ္ခုေပါက္ၾကားသြားခဲ့ တယ္၊ Motorola မွာလည္း ေခါက္လို႔ရတဲ့ RazorPhone ထုတ္လုပ္ေနေၾကာင္း သတင္းမ်ားထြက္လာတယ္။ အခုလိုဖုန္း ကုမၸဏီတိုင္းလိုလို ေခါက္ဖုန္းမ်ား ထုတ္လုပ္ေနၾကျပီဆိုေတာ့ က်န္ေတာ္တို႔အေနနဲ႔ ေခါက္ဖုန္း နည္းပညာကို အသံုးျပဳ သင့္ပါသလား၊ ေခါက္ဖုန္း နည္းပညာက တကယ္ အသံုး၀င္ႏိုင္သလား ဆိုတာကို မဝယ္ခင္ ေမးခြန္းထုတ္ရေတာ့မယ္။

ေခါက္ဖုန္းေတြဟာ နည္းပညာအရ ၾကည့္မယ္ဆိုရင္ စိတ္ဝင္စားစရာေကာင္းပါတယ္။ ေနာက္ပိုင္းက်ရင္ E-book reader ႏွင့္ Laptop ေတြမွာလည္းအသံုးျပဳလာႏိုင္တဲ့နည္းပညာတစ္ခုျဖစ္လာနိုင္ေခ်ရွိပါတယ္။ ဒီ နည္းပညာကို စစ္ေရးပိုင္းမွာ အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္သလို အာကာသစူးစမ္းရွာေဖြေရးမ်ားတြင္လည္း အသံုးဝင္လာႏိုင္ေသာနည္းပညာတစ္ခုျဖစ္လာဖို႔ရည္မွန္းထားၾကတယ္။

ယခုအခ်ိန္မွာေတာ့ နည္းပညာရဲ့ပထမ အဆင့္သာရွိပါေသးတယ္။ ဝယ္ယူသူေတြရဲ့စိတ္ဝင္စား မႈကိုရရွိႏိုင္ေပမယ့္ေစ်းႏႈန္းဆိုတဲ့အရာၾကီးတစ္ခုက ကန္႕သတ္ခ်က္လိုျဖစ္ေနတာ ေၾကာင့္အမ်ားသံုးနိုင္ဖို႔ ရည္ရြယ္ျပီးထုတ္လုပ္တာမဟုတ္မွန္းသိသာေနတယ္။ Samsung Galaxy Fold ကို အေရအတြက္အကန္႔အသတ္ႏွင့္ထုတ္လုပ္သြားမယ္လို႕လည္း Samsung က အတည္ျပဳေျပာၾကားခဲ့တယ္။

ယခုခ်ိန္မွာေတာ့ ေခါက္ဖုန္းကို နည္းပညာစိတ္ဝင္စားသူေတြနဲ႔ ေခါက္ဖုန္းကိုမွ သံုးခ်င္သူေတြပဲဝယ္ယူျဖစ္ၾကလိမ့္မယ္။ ဒီနည္းပညာဟာေနာက္ သံုးႏွစ္ငါးႏွစ္အတြင္းမွာမရွိမျဖစ္ လူသံုးမ်ားလာမည့္ ဖုန္းျဖစ္လာမလားဆိုတာကိုေတာ့  ေစာင့္ၾကည့္ရမွာျဖစ္ပါတယ္။
